Overview

We are looking for candidates with a solid background in undergraduate-level mathematics, statistics, finance, and computing.  Please visit PG Program & Course Catalog for information on admission requirements, admission timeline, and other information about postgraduate programs.

Admission Criteria

To be eligible for admission to the Master of Science in Financial Mathematics program, candidates must:

Program Fee

The program fee for the 2024/25 Intake is HK$250,000 for 36 credits. This applies to both full-time and part-time students. Students who wish to enroll for extra credits or need to retake any courses in the program are required to pay an extra fee of HK$ 6,945 per credit.

English Requirements

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
    • Paper-based test (PBT) score of no less than 550
    • Internet-based test (iBT) score of no less than 80
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
    • overall score of 6.5 (raised from 6.0 previously) with no sub-score lower than 5.5
  • You do not need to present TOEFL or IELTS score if
    • your first language is English, or
    • your bachelor's degree (or equivalent) is from an institution where the medium of instruction is English.

After accepting an admission offer, you will need to submit the official documents, or certified true copies of the official documents (for irreplaceable documents only), by the date specified on the offer letter.

Interview Timeline and Details

Normally, successful applicants may receive interview/ exam invitations via email, which contain information regarding the interview format and date (either online or face-to-face). On certain occasions, some applicants will receive direct offers if their application materials show exceptional suitability for this MSc program. 

Please note that applications for this programme are considered on a rolling basis so you should apply as soon as possible due to competition for places.

Offer Acceptance

Admission offers will usually be issued from December to May. Please see this Guide on the procedures for accepting your offers. Make sure all the official transcripts and other necessary documentation are sent directly by the issuing authorities by the deadline stipulated in the offer letter/ Document Checklist.

Financial Aids and Essential Information for Prospective Students

Our program (MAFM) is one of the chosen programs to receive Targeted Taught Programmes (TPg) Fellowships by the University Grants Committee (UGC). See the below information to learn more about the fellowship scheme:

All applicants (2024/25 cohort) will be considered for the MAFM Admission Scholarships: 

  • No separate application is required.
  • The program committee will evaluate the full profiles of the candidates, and the selection is highly competitive.
  • Students who have been awarded other government scholarships or fellowships (except student financial assistance) for pursuing the same program will not be considered.
  • Only newly admitted students for the corresponding cohort are eligible. Scholarship recipients will be notified upon admission.

How to Apply?

Apply via HKUST Online PG Admissions System by the following steps:

  1. You should create your online application account here
    Please visit this official guide on how to apply for MSc in Financial Mathematics and read the Program Catalog before you apply.
  2. Submit your online application before the deadline. The application fee of HKD500 must be paid upon submission of the application.
    We recommend that you submit your application as soon as possible as we may need to request further information from you to assess your application. This is particularly important if your application is successful and you are required to meet any offer conditions, and/or you need a Student Visa to study with us.
    You should note that only the following modifications are possible after submitting your application:
    • Marks/ scores not available at the time of application can be provided;
    • Supporting documents can be uploaded;
    • Invitations to referees can be resent;
    • If there are quotas available, more referees can be added;
    • Personal contact details can be updated; 
    If you expect to obtain academic/ examination results later, you can include the expected attainment date in the application and provide the results after submitting the application.
    However, all other information entered cannot be changed or deleted once the application has been submitted.
  3. Check for the application status at the Online Admission System regularly. Potential interview invitations and other status updates will be sent via email.
  4. Follow the steps to accept the offer in the system.
